Education

B.S. Business Management – Northern Illinois University – 1973
While pursuing a double major (Art and Business), I graduated with a business degree. However, my art classes outnumbered my business classes, and my hours spent in the art building far exceeded my hours spent in the business building. Two NIU professors who significantly influenced my development as an artist are:
Bob Falwell - design and sculpture
Robert Kabak - painting

Experience

After graduation, I put my career as an artist on hold, and used my business degree to begin a successful career in sales and operations with a variety of software companies. During this time I continued to experiment with different styles as a part-time artist, and I had limited gallery showings. Finally after launching a startup software company, and helping it grow into a successful business, I made a career decision in March of 2003 to follow my heart and leave the corporate world behind. At that time I became a shareholder in the software company, and a full–time artist. Since this career change, I have become a happier person, my art work has matured dramatically, and I have worked with a number of galleries.

Artist Statement

My paintings are abstract in style, but unlike most abstract work, my particular style of work is a very detailed geometric style. My work explores relationships between color, line, and shape. Generally small brightly colored geometric shapes such as dots, triangles, or rectangles are used as carriers of individual colors. Because each small geometric shape is a different color or shade, the success of the painting demands that each shape works with the adjacent shapes to create the overall design or movement within the painting. In some of my work subtle color changes or blending allow each observer to see different patterns or movement. Other times I use a layering process such as dots on top of a plaid pattern, or different size dots to create the design or movement.

While some artists intentionally look for the randomness and the possibilities in the painting process, I want to know in advance precisely where each dot will be placed, what color it will be, and how that color relates to the color of the adjacent dot, or the background color when a layering process is used.
